Change Management – Is it harmful?
Facing the reality of change in the current economic/employment market is a daunting situation. Talking with businesses and students, it is evident that the effects of stress should not be underestimated. Anxiety levels increase when there is a prospect of change due to acquisitions, downsizing or potential organisational closure.
The consequences of “poorly managed change” is a risk to the mental health of employees. Health and safety duties require the management of risks that can harm the mental health of employees.
Common issues that create a stressful work environment include:
- Failure to communicate the change with employees which results in speculation, rumours, doubt and uncertainty.
- Lack of consultation and involvement, leaving employees feeling unsupported, devalued and unmotivated.
- Changes to roles and positions causing employees to have concerns about their level of capabilities or even the daunting prospect of learning new skills or more training.
- Adjustments to organisational structure causing confusion about reporting and the chain of command.
- The emotional toll is an adds to the pressures that employees already face with everyday challenges.
How can these issues be managed to reduce the risks?
- Develop and implement a communication strategy for individuals and/or the whole workforce, including the background for the change.
- Conduct regular meetings to share information and give employees the opportunity to raise and discuss concerns.
- Train management representatives so they can provide support to employees through the phases of change.
- Encourage an “open door” policy and provide practical and emotional support to help employees cope or foster resilience.
- Consider retraining opportunities and encourage employees to embrace new skills.
- Provide clarity regarding structural changes and ensure employees know where to address their concerns.
- Support flexible arrangements during the change where individual needs can be accommodated.
Remember, people need to have ownership of the vision to embrace it.
For every organisation, employees are their most important asset.
